Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders clearly have one of the best offenses in the Big 12. We’re four games into the Texas Tech football season and there’s no way anyone could deny that. This group is so dang productive and so dang impressive. But it’s how impressive that the Red Raiders have been that just seems a little unreal.

Looking at the scoring that Texas Tech is doing this season and it’s truly something else. I mean, we’re talking about a team that has been averaging 52 points per game and that average includes on the road against the Utah Utes, who have one of the most physical and disciplined defenses in the country.

The Red Raiders are, by far, the best at scoring in the Big 12 up to this point in the season. And they’re nearly two full touchdowns better than the next best team.

Texas Tech’s offense is the best in the Big 12 when it comes to points scored per game

Here’s the top offenses in the Big 12, when looking at points per game:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 52 PPG
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - 39.5 PPG
  • Utah Utes - 39 PPG
  • BYU Cougars - 38.5 PPG
  • TCU Horned Frogs - 37.3 PPG
  • Baylor Bears - 36.6 PPG
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 36.6 PPG
  • UCF Knights - 34.8 PPG
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 31.6 PPG
  • Arizona Wildcats 31.3 PPG
  • Houston Cougars - 31.3 PPG
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 29.2 PPG
  • Kansas State Wildcats - 26.2 PPG
  • Colorado Buffaloes - 25.8 PPG
  • West Virginia Mountainteers - 22 PPG
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys - 17.3 PPG

Again, that gap that exists between No. 1 and No. 2 is remarkable. We’re talking about a canyon at this point. There’s a 12.5 point per game difference between Cincinnati’s offense and Texas Tech’s offense. That differential is larger than the difference between Cincinnati’s offense at No. 2 and Arizona State’s offense at No. 12.

Also, Texas Tech is more than doubling what Colorado is doing right now on offense. And that just seems truly and fully absurd to think about. In case you were wondering if Mack Leftwich was the right sort of hire and if all of the NIL push was worth it, it’s safe to say that so far he was and it is.
