I find myself amazed by what all the Texas Tech softball team is able to accomplish and the sorts of stats that they’re putting up. So far, the Red Raiders have struck out a grand total of 83 times this season. That’s the fewest in the Big 12 by a very wide margin.
The Big 12’s average is 130 strikeouts. That sort of gap gives Texas Tech a sizable advantage over the rest of the conference in some pretty impressive ways.
Through the 898 at bats that Texas Tech has partaken in, the Red Raiders have struck out less than 10 percent of the time. That means that Texas Tech is able to make contact in essentially nine out of every 10 at bats. Combine that with the fact that the Red Raiders have a ton of firepower (as evidenced by the 75 home runs and the .752 slugging percentage) and Texas Tech is more than capable of doing a ton of damage on a very regular basis.
The Big 12’s strikeout chasm between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the rest of the conference is getting a little absurd
Texas Tech has 14 fewer strikeouts than the next best team, which happens to be the Baylor Bears with 97 strikeouts on the season. Baylor is the only other team in the conference to not have at least 100 strikeouts on the season so far.
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 83 strikeouts
- Baylor Bears - 97 strikeouts
- Utah UTes - 108 strikeouts
- Arizona Wildcats - 111 strikeouts
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 113 strikeouts
- Kansas Jayhawks - 115 strikeouts
- UCF Knights - 121 strikeouts
- Iowa State Cyclones - 138 strikeouts
- BYU Cougars - 151 strikeouts
- Houston Cougars - 159 strikeouts
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 167 strikeouts
There’s also an interesting ratio to consider here. Texas Tech has struck out 83 times, but they’ve walked 160 times. That strikeout to walk ratio is roughly 1:2. They’re drawing walks nearly twice as many times as they strike out. That’s as a team. The whole team. All of them. That’s impressive.
