The Texas Tech Red Raiders have desperately needed help on the defensive side of things for a very long time. Defense isn’t something that has been a bright spot for many Texas Tech football teams over the past couple of decades.
And so, with the advent and widespread recruiting adoption of the Transfer Portal as a way to overhaul significant parts of a roster in a hurry, the Red Raiders now have a very viable way to very quickly improve its roster’s weak spots. Texas Tech has a very real method to beefing things up.
Take the Red Raiders’ defensive line, for example. This isn’t an area where Texas Tech has thrived in recent seasons. However, because of the additions of MULTIPLE talented athletes to the Red Raiders’ defensive front, this could be a bright spot for TTU this coming season.
And the good folks examining college football over at Pro Football Focus seem to think that the Red Raiders will definitely benefit from the transfer portal additions on the defensive line. So much so that Texas Tech’s entire defensive line was listed among the top impact transfers heading into the season.

Texas Tech improved its defensive line so much via the transfer portal and the group is now considered a top impact transfer for 2025
Just a refresher for a moment, here are the players that Texas Tech got for the defensive line via the transfer portal:
- 4-star David Bailey from Stanford
- 4-star Romello Height from Georgia Tech
- 4-star Lee Hunter from UCF
- 3-star Sklyer Gill-Howard from NIU
- 3-star Anthony Holmes Jr. from Houston
That’s a really solid group! Especially considering that Texas Tech’s defense didn’t exactly disrupt too many opposing offenses. So the Red Raiders addressed that. This group should help the entirety of the defense this coming season as it pressures quarterbacks on a more regular basis and bulldozes into opposing offensive lines.
