This has been such a magical and thrilling season for the Texas Tech Red Raiders softball team. So many things have gone right for Gerry Glasco and his Red Raiders, especially in recent weeks. We’re talking about a team that had, prior to Wednesday evening’s loss against the Texas Longhorns in Game 1 of the 2025 Women’s College World Series Finals, won 12 games in a row.
And, well, quick note: that winning streak is done. Over. No more.
That winning streak dated back over a month all the way to May 3, in the final regular season game of 2025 for TTU. The Red Raiders managed to beat BYU in Provo, Utah to kick off a a series of wins for Texas Tech.
That included a perfect run through the Big 12 Conference Tournament, a perfect run through the Lubbock Regional, a perfect run through the Tallahassee Super Regional, and what had previously been a perfect stretch of games in Oklahoma City. Wins over the Ole Miss Rebels, UCLA Bruins, and the Oklahoma Sooners did plenty to test Texas Tech.
Each time, TTU won during that slate of games, sometimes in truly remarkable ways.
But against the Longhorns, Tech wasn’t able to put away the game. The Red Raiders fell short. That dozen-game winning streak came to a halt.

The Texas Longhorns didn’t exactly have much of a clean performance against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas had a grand total of four errors in this game, but the Red Raiders weren’t able to mate UT really pay for those mistakes.
And it’s not like Texas was the most dominant or terrifying or impressive team that the plate. UT actually struggled against NiJaree Canady.
Well, that’s everyone except Reese Atwood, who managed to smack a two-run RBI to give the Longhorns a 2-1 lead over the Red Raiders late in the game. And that 2-1 lead carried right on over the the 7th inning and then right into the end of the game.
Texas and Texas Tech will meet back up on Thursday, June 5 for Game 2 of the 2025 Women’s College World Series championship series.
