If you thought the Texas Tech softball team was really impressive with what the Red Raiders are able to accomplish at the plate, I suspect you’re going to be impressed with what the Red Raiders are doing in the circle to go along with that.
As Texas Tech is leading the Big 12 in runs scored, Texas Tech’s pitching staff is the best in the Big 12 at limiting teams from scoring runs. So far, Texas Tech has yet to give up 100 runs this season. Instead, the Red Raiders are allowing fewer than 2 runs per game.
Here’s what that looks like compared to the rest of the conference:
The Texas Tech softball pitching staff is giving up just 1.8 runs per game, the best such mark in the Big 12 so far this season
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 94 runs in 52 games
- UCF Knights - 167 runs in 51 games
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 170 runs in 47 games
- Utah Utes - 192 runs in 52 games
- Kansas Jayhawks - 193 runs in 49 games
- Arizona Wildcats - 212 runs in 47 games
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 223 runs in 51 games
- Baylor Bears - 237 runs in 51 games
- Iowa State Cyclones - 288 runs in 51 games
- BYU Cougars - 333 runs in 47 games
- Houston Cougars - 385 runs in 51 games
When stacking the Red Raiders pitching staff up against Baylor’s pitching staff ahead of the start to this weekend’s series, the Red Raiders are clearly far better than the Bears in the circle. Baylor is allowing an average of 4.7 runs per game to their opponents, which is a fair bit more than the 1.8 runs per game that Texas Tech is yielding.
And if we’re going to take a look at how the Bears are faring at the plate, Baylor is scoring roughly 4.9 runs per game. The Red Raiders aren’t exactly set to face a juggernaut on offense in this series. There’s a chance that Texas Tech is able to really limit the Bears in this matchup.
