Gerry Glasco and the Texas Tech softball team have done an incredible job of accumulating highly ranked talent in Lubbock, Texas. That’s visible all over the roster for the Red Raiders, but it’s particularly noticeable in the circle. NiJaree Canady, Kaitlyn Terry, and Samantha Lincoln have combined to become the best pitching staff across the Big 12.
There’s no other team in the Big 12 with a pitching staff that is capable of striking out opposing batters with the same sort of regularity as what the Red Raiders are doing this season. There’s just simply not a collection of talent on any other roster in this conference that can do that.
And that’s why Texas Tech’s 367 strikeouts so far this season are leading the conference.
Here’s how Texas Tech’s 367 strikeouts of opposing batters ranks against the rest of the Big 12’s pitching staffs
Here’s how the rest of the league stacks up behind Texas Tech:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 367 strikeouts in 299.0 innings pitched
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 350 strikeouts in 330.2 innings pitched
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 233 strikeouts in 306.0 innings pitched
- Baylor Bears - 218 strikeouts in 336.2 innings pitched
- Utah Utes - 216 strikeouts in 333.1 innings pitched
- Kansas Jayhawks - 210 strikeouts in 310.2 innings pitched
- BYU Cougars - 208 strikeouts in 283.2 innings pitched
- UCF Knights - 189 strikeouts in 330.2 innings pitched
- Houston Cougars - 162 strikeouts in 322.2 innings pitched
- Iowa State Cyclones - 156 strikeouts in 324 innings pitched
- Arizona Wildcats - 125 strikeouts in 280.1 innings pitched
It’s fascinating to see how the rest of the conference measures up. Texas Tech is leading the Arizona State Sun Devils by 17 strikeouts right now, but the Red Raiders have pitched in 30 fewer innings than Arizona State’s staff. That’s an incredible disparity.
There are only two teams whose pitching staffs have performed in fewer innings than Texas Tech’s and that’s Arizona (with 19 fewer innings pitched but 242 fewer strikeouts) and BYU (with 16 fewer innings pitched and 159 fewer strikeouts).
