The Texas Tech Red Raiders absolutely currently look like the best team in the Big 12 after handling business against the UCF Knights Saturday afternoon. When hosting Scott Frost and the Knights, Texas Tech managed to jump out to a massive lead early and then absolutely exploded in the second quarter to build a 36-point halftime lead.
It’s never a bad thing to be up 38-2 at halftime and that sort of monumental lead over a conference foe allowed Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders to go ahead and rest Behren Morton, protecting their starting quarterback as the game was already well in control for Texas Tech.
UCF was able to get a touchdown on the board in the third quarter, but the game was already way out of reach, effectively over before the Knights’ offense was able to find any sort of life or momentum. And Texas Tech should be absolutely proud of that fact.
Texas Tech locks up its 10th win as the Red Raiders hand UCF a beating on Senior Day
All 10 of Texas Tech’s wins this season have come by at least 22 points. The Red Raiders have truly thrived and this is yet another instance of Texas Tech securing a blowout win thanks to some absolute dominance on both sides of the ball.
The Red Raiders gained just shy of 500 total yards of offense when facing UCF and the Texas Tech defense managed to hold the Knights to just 230 total yards of offense.
Obviously Jacob Rodriguez deserves so much credit for the way that he performed today. Nine tackles, one pick, and a rushing touchdown helped make it clear that he is a true Heisman candidate. All of that said, Rodriguez wasn’t the only star today.
Reggie Virgil played a huge role for Texas Tech’s offense as he caught five passes for 72 yards and a score and then also got a couple of carries for the Red Raiders and turned that into 35 rushing yards and a couple of scores on the ground.
Caleb Douglas and Cameron Dickey also thrived in Texas Tech’s offense today. Douglas managed to catch five passes for 90 yards while Dickey turned 11 carries into 77 yards and two more rushing touchdowns.
Texas Tech will now head into a bye week after handling business against UCF. The Red Raiders have control of their own destiny. And things certainly look good for Texas Tech right now.
