I suspect the bye week was good for Texas Tech. I think Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders likely needed a little bit of rest. Their first four games were pretty busy with scoring a bunch of points and beating teams by rather large margins and such. A little bit of breathing room never hurt anyone.

But now, in Week 6, the Red Raiders will get back to business. Texas Tech will face off with an unbeaten Houston Cougars team in the Bayou City this weekend. And while Houston isn’t ranked in either the AP Poll or the Coaches Poll, the fact that they’re 4-0 at this point in the season is something worth acknowledging.

Texas Tech can’t overlook this opportunity to continue to prove that they’re the best team in the Big 12, even if they aren’t the highest ranked team in the current edition of the Coaches Poll Top 25 rankings. In fact, Texas Tech sits as the No. 2 Big 12 team in this set of rankings

Here’s what the Big 12 looks like in the Coaches Poll this week:

Big 12 teams in the Top 25, Week 6: Texas Tech ranks as the No. 2 Big 12 team in the Coaches Poll

  • Iowa State Cyclones (No. 12 overall)
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders (No. 14 overall)
  • BYU Cougars (No. 23 overall)
  • Arizona State Sun Devils (No. 24 overall)
  • Utah Utes (No. 25 overall)

The Big 12 is getting a bit more respect from the Coaches Poll than over in the AP Poll, where only four teams from America’s most entertaining college football conference are ranked. And interestingly enough, Texas Tech should benefit a bit from the teams that are ranked over here in this set of Top 25 rankings.

The Red Raiders won’t get to play every single Big 12 team in the Coaches Poll Top 25 in the regular season, but they’ve already beaten Utah, and in a few weeks Texas Tech will head to Tempe to meet up with Arizona State. And then of course, BYU will come to Lubbock later this season as well.
