Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team have a chance to accomplish something special in the Big 12 this season, but it seems like not everyone (or every predictive rankings calculation system) believes in what the Red Raiders are capable of.
If you ask the calculations that Kelley Ford worked through, you’d find that Texas Tech is currently ranking in at the No. 28 spot overall and the No. 4 spot in the Big 12.
I mean, it is worth noting that the Red Raiders are in a decent spot in these forward-looking rankings. Obviously you’d want the Texas Tech football team to get a bit more respect than what they’ve received so far here. But this still isn’t all that bad.
And there is also plenty of opportunity for Texas Tech to climb up as the Red Raiders go out, get some wins, and rack up stats that subsequently lead to the math magic calculation fun bumping McGuire’s team up a bit.
Texas Tech Red Raiders sit at No. 4 in the Big 12 according to Kelley Ford’s preseason power ratings
Here’s what the top 30 teams in Ford’s preseason power ratings look like right now:

And here’s how the Big 12 teams stack up at the moment:
- Kansas State Wildcats (No. 21)
- Arizona State Sun Devils (No. 22)
- Baylor Bears (No. 26)
- Texas Tech Red Raiders (No. 28)
- TCU Horned Frogs (No. 33)
- Utah Utes (No. 34)
- BYU Cougars (No. 36)
- Iowa State Cyclones (No. 37)
- Kansas Jayhawks (No. 40)
- Colorado Buffaloes (No. 51)
- Cincinnati Bearcats (No. 53)
- UCF Knights (No. 56)
- Houston Cougars (No. 63)
- West Virginia Mountaineers (No. 64)
- Arizona Wildcats (No. 66)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (No. 67)
It is absolutely fascinating to see the order of this grouping. I guess for some reason I didn’t expect a team like the Oklahoma State Cowboys to fall so far down in this sort of ranking, but it makes sense given all of the pressure that Mike Gundy is under in Stillwater given their recent struggles.
