The 2025-2026 college football season has come to a close. The Indiana Hoosiers are the national champs (for the first time ever) and we’re now fully entering the offseason. The recruiting battles will still continue and we’ll likely continue to hear more transfer portal news here and there, but the on-field action for this college football season is complete.
Which means for college football fans who aren’t interested in keeping up with the college basketball season or the upcoming college baseball and softball seasons (that’s not me, I’m VERY excited that baseball and softball are just around the corner), it’s time to start paying attention and looking ahead to the next football season.
And that will be here before we know it. We’ll get through spring football and all of the offseason hot takes and chatter and then August and real life, actual football games will be here once again.
But until then, let’s just enjoy the offseason and the hot takes and the conjecture and projections and the men’s and women’s basketball seasons and the upcoming baseball and softball seasons and way-too-early top 25 polls.
Texas Tech takes the No. 7 spot in 2026 way-too-early college football rankings from CBS Sports
According to CBS Sports’ very own Brandon Marcello, Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders will be heading into the next college football season as the No. 7 team in the country. Or at least that’s where they sit at the moment.

That’s not a bad spot to be for McGuire and the Red Raiders. Clearly there is still plenty that Texas Tech needs to do to prove itself (as evidenced by the regular season loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils and then the College Football Playoff mess of a loss to the Oregon Ducks).
But there’s obviously a ton to be excited about with this Texas Tech football program. There’s an unprecedented amount of momentum for this team right now and the Red Raiders are thriving on the recruiting trail and in the transfer portal.
If McGuire, Mack Leftwich, and Shiel Wood can continue building on the foundation that they set this past season, then next year is going to be a ton of fun to watch.
