Game one of the Women’s College World Series couldn’t have gone better for Gerry Glasco and the Texas Tech softball team. Truly, everything went the Red Raiders’ way as they faced off against Samantha Ricketts and the upset-minded Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Texas Tech just seemed to be operating on a completely different level as the Red Raiders dismantled the Bulldogs in an 8-0 run-rule win that lasted just five innings. Texas Tech’s start to the Women’s College World Series should send a message to the rest of the field. The Red Raiders are here and they’re aiming to win it all this season.
In the matchup against Mississippi State, the Red Raiders were able to get a conventional impressive performance from NiJaree Canady (who has had a few rough outings lately prior to getting to Oklahoma City). Mississippi State was limited to just two singles as Canady struck out three batters in four innings (with 47 pitches thrown). Kaitlyn Terry took over and took care of things with a scoreless fifth inning.
As Texas Tech heads to the winner’s bracket and awaits its next opponent, Red Raider softball fans are thrilled that their favorite team didn’t struggle at all on Thursday.
Texas Tech softball fans sure are excited that the Red Raiders crushed Mississippi State to start the WCWS
Here’s what Texas Tech softball fans had to say following the 8-0 win over Mississippi State.

Crazy how softball is so much about momentum. Tech has had it since that incredible comeback against Ole Miss. the Florida Super fueled it. The team is looking great! https://t.co/Fw1a6CV7Fu

The Red Raiders were fantastic. And it wasn’t just the dominant pitching effort from Canady and Terry that deserves some praise here. Texas Tech got an impressive showing at the plate from the Red Raiders lineup. Against a Mississippi State pitching staff that shutout the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech managed to get eight runs off of seven hits and two walks. The Red Raiders struck out just three times.

There’s a lot to be proud of here. Texas Tech has come so far as a program and this game is just more proof for how much potential the Red Raiders have as a team.

It’s fascinating. The last three foes that Texas Tech has faced have all come from the Southeastern Conference. The Ole Miss Rebels in the Lubbock Regional, the Florida Gators in the Gainesville Super Regional, and now the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Women’s College World Series. The next foe that the Red Raiders face will be an SEC opponent as the winner of Texas and Tennessee will play Texas Tech.
