Look, not everyone loves the Texas Tech softball team and Gerry Glasco is okay with that. Part of why he might be okay with that is because the Red Raiders apparently have an incredibly loyal and loving fanbase for their softball program.

Glasco and the Red Raiders might be a little polarizing for some folks right now. The Red Raiders are in their second trip to the Women’s College World Series (which is literally just their second ever trip to Oklahoma City to try to compete for a national title), and yet folks are acting like Texas Tech isn’t a perennial underdog sort of program.

For some reason, with the changing landscape of college athletics, folks have their feathers ruffled over the Red Raiders finding ways to win. But while folks outside of West Texas aren’t in love with the Texas Tech softball team, Red Raider fans in Lubbock are over the moon with Glasco and everything Texas Tech is accomplishing right now.

Because this sort of stuff is unprecedented for Texas Tech. And it’s a good thing that an underdog program is achieving more than it has in the past. Glasco knows it. Texas Tech fans know it.

“If you come to Lubbock, you’ll know the softball community is just rabid right now,” Glasco said. “When I first got there, you couldn’t buy a softball shirt. You could go to all the clothing stores, you couldn’t find anything with a softball logo or a yellow softball. You couldn’t find anything that said Texas Tech softball. Now it’s everywhere.”

Gerry Glasco is thrilled that the Red Raiders have created a rabid Texas Tech softball fanbase in just two seasons

Glasco and the Red Raiders have provided a proof of concept for what this program can be and Texas Tech fans have immediately bought in. That’s great for West Texas and it’s good for college softball.

“The minute we got in the World Series, people are sending me pictures of the sweatshirts and blankets with the World Series. The town of Lubbock has embraced our program and it’s crazy the support we’re getting.”

But of course, not everyone is happy that Texas Tech has found ways to win games and compete for a national title. Some college softball fans aren’t thrilled that the Red Raiders have changed the power balance in this sport.

“I was laughing yesterday, like we’re the villains in America,” Glasco said. “I’m telling you, we’re the Cinderella of Lubbock, Texas and they love us in Lubbock, Texas. We’re right there with Buddy Holly right now.”
