Look, extra base hits don’t tell the full story of just how good a team is, but they do help add context for how good a team is. Like, if your favorite team happens to lead its conference in hits, batting average, and something like triples, then your favorite team is probably really, really good.

Such is the case with the Texas Tech softball team, which is at the top of the Big 12 leaderboard when it comes to getting triples. The Red Raiders are clearly great with power hitting and with scooting down the basepaths with aggressive baserunning.

There’s a lot to be impressed by with this particular Texas Tech softball team.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have more triples than the rest of the Big 12 which is just a lot of fun

Here’s how things look for the Big 12 as we head to the final weekend of the regular season:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 12 triples in 52 games
  • UCF Knights - 11 triples in 51 games
  • Utah Utes - 10 triples in 52 games
  • Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 10 triples in 47 games
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 9 triples in 49 games
  • Arizona Wildcats - 9 triples in 47 games
  • BYU Cougars - 9 triples in 47 games
  • Baylor Bears - 7 triples in 51 games
  • Houston Cougars - 5 triples in 51 games
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 3 triples in 51 games
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 3 triples in 51 games

It’s interesting. This is one of the stats where Texas Tech does lead, but that margin isn’t massive. That said, it’s hard to hit a triple. Especially when you consider the amount of speed necessary to beat in a throw from the outfield to the infield with a softball field given the dimensions.

So, theoretically, with the last series of the regular season upon us, it’s possible that someone could pass Texas Tech here. The margin for UCF or Utah or Oklahoma State to get there isn’t impossible to obtain. It’s just tricky.
