Well, Gerry Glasco and the Texas Tech Red Raiders managed to pull off something that seemed absolutely impossible. With just one out left in the game and while trailing by eight runs, the Texas Tech softball team somehow found a way to take down the Ole Miss Rebels and stay in the winner’s bracket of the Lubbock Regional.
As ESPN noted, teams were previously 0-640 while trailing by eight or more runs in the NCAA softball tournament.Â
Texas Tech is the first team in history to be able to come back like that and win. The Red Raiders scored eight in the bottom of the seventh inning, forced extra innings, and then walked it off in the eighth inning to win 10-9.

This is a game that the Rebels really had control of for 6.2 innings of play. From early home runs (like Kennery Bunker’s leadoff homer in the first inning) to Rachel Connors hitting a three-run shot in the fourth inning, Ole Miss routinely found success against Texas Tech’s pitching today.Â
Texas Tech softball erases eight-run deficit with two outs in the 7th inning to stun Ole Miss in the Lubbock Regional
That includes in the seventh inning, when the Rebels hit another home run, had an RBI single, and then a 2-RBI double to give Ole Miss an 8-0 lead.
And prior to the bottom of the seventh inning, Ole Miss pitcher Emilee Boyer allowed just a couple of hits through six innings of play.
But, to get things really rolling in the seventh inning, Lauren Allred led off with a single and was later able to advance to second thanks to a two-out wild pitch to Kaitlyn Terry. Terry then hit a single which allowed Allred to scoot home and get Texas Tech on the scoreboard. Jackie Lis then followed that up with a two-run home run to cut things to 8-3 and give Texas Tech a bit of momentum.
From there, Jasmyn Burns, Mia Williams, and Taylor Pannell all hit singles (in back-to-back-to-back fashion) to set the score at 8-4. Desirae Spearman was walked, which loaded the bases and brought Allred back to the plate. With her second at-bat of the inning, Allred hit a grand slam and tied things up for the Red Raiders.
In total, that seventh inning rally included seven hits and one walk. All with two outs. And the Red Raiders and Rebels were tied at 8-8 heading to the eighth inning.
Ole Miss was able to get an RBI single in the top of the inning to retake the lead, but that lead didn’t last all that long.
Kaitlyn Terry and Jackie Lis both drew walks thanks to eight straight balls and then Jasmyn Burns hit an RBI single to get things tied up. With a sac fly from Williams, Lis was able to scoot on over to third. And from there, Pannell hit a sac fly to bring Lis home and give Texas Tech a historic 10-9 win over Ole Miss.
Texas Tech stayed alive in such a meaningful way. The Red Raiders were able to win and are staying in the winner’s bracket. They’ll face the winner between Ole Miss and Boston University.
