Texas Tech sports news roundup: Soccer eliminated, Lady Raiders win again, more
Here is your Texas Tech sports news roundup for November 25, 2024.
Texas Tech soccer eliminated from NCAA Tournament
Friday night, the Texas Tech soccer team's season came to an end when the Red Raiders fell to Duke 3-0 in Durham, North Carolina. The Blue Devils now advance to the Sweet 16 while Tech reloads for the offseason.
Duke peppered Tech goalkeeper Faith Nguyen who made a career-high nine saves in the loss. However, Nguyen would surrender a goal just 68 seconds before halftime and another eight minutes into the second half as the home team built an insurmountable lead.
"First, it's only proper to congratulate Duke on a great game," Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said, "a really good second half, and they proved that they're the number one team in the country for a reason. It's not easy to get knocked out ever, but when you get knocked out by a really good team who played really well, there's some consolation because we played really hard. [Duke HC] Robbie Church, coached me when I was here. It's hard to be happy for him right now because of the emotion. But the reality is, I'm proud of Robbie. I'm excited what he's doing with this program, with this team. In his retirement season, we wish him and Carla, Kieran, Jason, all the best. We hope that they continue to win so we can say we got knocked out by the national champions."
Texas Tech Lady Raiders continue hot start to the season
Saturday, the Lady Raiders moved to 6-0 with a 78-70 victory against the New Orleans Privateers in Lubbock. In the win, three Texas Tech players scored in double figures including sophomore Jalynn Bristow who put up 17 points, and junior Bailey Maupin who scored a team-high 20.
However, the win was less than impressive given that the Privateers are winless on the season. In fact, this was the second game in a row in which the Lady Raiders did not put forth a dominant effort against an overmatched team.
"We knew going into it that New Orleans was going to play really fast," head coach Krista Gerlich said, "and they try to make the game pretty ugly because they are so quick and they're little. So, they really tried to get a lot of shots up. I thought it took us a little while in the first quarter to figure out, obviously, and we knew it was going to be that way, but I thought that we made the right adjustments, and I thought that our kids responded well and kind of closed out the first quarter…
"They were able to take the lead back and kind of get their scoring under control. And then our second quarter was much better. So, I felt like we adjusted pretty well for three quarters, and then the fourth quarter, we kind of allowed [New Orleans] to continue to get paint touches and score in the paint, and then we just weren't knocking down shots and we have to knock down shots better.
"I mean, I keep saying it and I'm going to keep saying it, because I really believe in these girls, but we can shoot the basketball, and we're just not shooting it at a high clip just yet. But, I thought that Jalynn [Bristow] obviously helped us just getting some paint touches and especially against the zone early in the first half. And then I thought that Bailey [Maupin]obviously got some to go down, that helped us as well and just gave us a little bit of a spark."
Texas Tech volleyball swept by TCU
Friday in Fort Worth, the Texas Tech volleyball team had a rough day as the Red Raiders were swept by the TCU Horned Frogs 3-0. It was the third straight game in which Tech has failed to win a set.
Brynn Williams led the team with 13 kills while Hanna Borer had 24 assists and five digs. Meanwhile, TCU's star, Melanie Parra, finished with 14 kills and seven digs for the No. 22 Horned Frogs.
The Red Raiders will head home for their final two matches of the season against Houston and Arizona on Nov. 27 and Nov. 29, respectively.
