Texas Tech softball takes series from Oklahoma State

In a showdown of the top two teams in the Big 12, the Texas Tech softball team proved that it is the elite team in the conference. Taking two of three games from No. 13 Oklahoma State, which was picked first in the conference preseason poll, the Red Raiders made an early-season statement.

Friday, the Red Raiders swept a doubleheader, outscoring OSU by a total of 11-0 in the two games. In game one, Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back on the way to a 9-0 laugher that ended by run-rule after five innings. Playing in front of a record home crowd, Tech got a strong start from pitcher NiJaree Canady, who tossed 4.0 innings of scoreless ball, allowing only three hits and striking out three.

In the nightcap, things were more closely contested. In Tech's 2-0 win, starting pitcher Chloe Riassetto (who tossed one inning to close out game one) was fantastic.

She tossed four complete innings giving up no runs on two hits with one walk to pick up the win. Meanwhile, Tech got the only offense of the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Unfortunately, Tech wasn't able to secure the sweep on Sunday, though. In a 10-1 loss, Canady was touched up for five runs in just 2.0 innings of work. However, only two of those runs were earned. The only bright spot was a solo homer by Alexa Langeliers that provided the Red Raiders with their only offense of the game.

Still, by taking the series from Oklahoma State, Texas Tech proved that it is the favorite to win the Big 12. Next, the Red Raiders will take on Baylor for three games in Waco this weekend.

Texas Tech baseball continues to struggle in a big way

Life isn't as good for the Texas Tech baseball team, unfortunately. The Red Raiders were swept this weekend in Phoenix, Arizona by Grand Canyon to fall to 3-11 on the season.

In Friday's 12-5 loss, a 10-run 8th inning by the home team broke open a 2-2 game. In fact, after getting out to a 2-0 lead, the Red Raiders gave up 12 unanswered runs.

Saturday, the pitching woes that have plagued the team for most of this season continued in a 7-6 loss. Tech fell behind 7-3 in the bottom of the 4th and was unable to complete a comeback as the Red Raiders stranded the game-tying run at third base in their final trip to the plate.

Sunday, it was the bats that failed Tim Tadlock's team. In a 4-2 loss, Tech got five strong innings from pitcher Zane Petty, who allowed only two runs (one earned) on three hits. However, the Red Raiders managed to collect only seven hits on the day. Unfortunately, single runs by GCU in the 7th and 8th innings would prove to be the difference.

Tech will now try to get back on track this weekend with a three-game set at Houston. Perhaps the start of Big 12 play will be the point when this team finally starts to turn things around.

Texas Tech Lady Raiders eliminated in Big 12 quarterfinals

Friday night, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders saw their improbable run in the Big 12 Tournament come to an end. After rattling off two wins to reach the quarterfinals, the No. 14-seeded Lady Raiders fell to the No. 3 seed Oklahoma State 62-59 in Kansas City.

Sophomore Loghan Johnson led Tech with 17 points. That set a new career-high in points. Meanwhile, Jasmine Shavers poured in 16 points in the losing effort.

Tech actually led the game by four points at the break. What's more, the Lady Raiders stayed right with Oklahoma State for the entire second half. In fact, Shavers had a shot in the final seconds to tie the game, but she couldn't connect.

The Lady Raiders end their season at 17-17 overall. Now, they will wait to see if they receive a bid to the Women's NIT, which will release its bracket on March 17.

Texas Tech women's tennis off to a hot start in Big 12 play

The No. 13 Texas Tech women's tennis team is off to a blistering start to conference play. This weekend, the Red Raiders picked up two road wins in the state of Utah by beating the Utah Utes and the BYU Cougars to move to 4-0 in league action.

Thursday, Tech picked up a 4-1 win in Salt Lake City. Then, on Saturday, a 4-2 win in Provo kept Tech perfect in conference play.

Next, the Red Raiders will continue their road ways with a match against TCU Friday in Fort Worth and a match Sunday against Baylor on Sunday in Waco.
