Here's a look at the latest headlines from around the Texas Tech athletic department for Friday, May 2, 2025.
Texas Tech softball rolling toward the postseason
The No. 11 Texas Tech softball team is red-hot as the regular season draws to a close. Thanks to a 9-4 win over BYU Thursday night in Provo, the Red Raiders have won 18 of their last 20 games.
Of course, NiJaree Canady had a huge role in the victory. In the circle, she tossed 5.2 innings, allowing one run and striking out eight to pick up her 22nd win of the season. At the plate, she went 3-4 with four runs driven in and a homer, her eighth of the season.

Texas Tech football transfers find new homes
This week, a number of former Texas Tech football players found new opportunities via the transfer portal. One is junior edge rusher Joseph Adedire, who has committed to NC State. During his Red Raider career, he registered 44 tackles and two sacks.
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Dylan Shaw has committed to North Texas, where he will play for former Texas Tech receiver Eric Morris. In 2024, he saw action in three games as a backup for the Red Raiders.
Another redshirt freshman, Nick Fattig, has landed at Stanford. Last season, he appeared in four games as a backup guard.
Texas Tech football products get NFL opportunities after going undrafted
Last weekend, the NFL Draft was held, and two Red Raiders, Tahj Brooks and Caleb Douglas, were selected. Since then, a number of other Texas Tech alums have signed on with NFL teams as free agents.

Texas Tech baseball continues to flounder
Unfortunately, the Texas Tech baseball team's dreadful 2025 season took another negative turn this week when the Red Raiders dropped a pair of home games to UTRGV. That was disappointing given that the team was coming off an impressive series win over top-20 Arizona last weekend.
Tech now sits at just 15-26 overall on the season after losses on Tuesday and Wednesday. In game one vs. UTRGV, Tech fell behind 9-2 after the top of the third thanks to a seven-run outburst from the visitors in the third. After a rain delay of over three hours, Tech was unable to mount a comeback, eventually falling 13-4.
Wednesday, the Red Raiders again fell into an early hole and could not climb out. Trailing 7-0 after the top of the fifth, Tech didn't score until the bottom of the ninth.
In their final at-bat, the Red Raiders managed to plate four runs before recording an out. What's more, they had three consecutive at-bats with the equalizing run at the plate. However, the comeback wasn't to be in a three-run defeat.
Now, life doesn't get any easier. This weekend, Tech will be at West Virginia for a three-game series. The Mountaineers are 37-6 overall and 16-3 in Big 12 play. They are ranked No. 16 in the nation and sit in first place in the conference standings.
