Here is your Texas Tech sports roundup for Monday, May 19, 2025.
Texas Tech track sweeps Big 12 Outdoor Championships
This weekend, in Lawrence, Kansas, Texas Tech Track and Field head coach Wes Kittley reminded everyone that he is the best coach on campus as his men's and women's track teams both won the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. That brought the total of Big 12 titles for the Texas Tech athletic department in the 2024-25 academic calendar to eight, the most of any university in the conference.
It was the sixth outdoor conference title for the men's program and the first for the women. The Red Raider men scored 136 points to blow past second-place BYU, which finished with 100.66 points.
The women secured 127 points to take the crown. Meanwhile, BYU was also second in that race with 112.5 points.
It has been a remarkable Big 12 season for the two programs. Each captured both the indoor and outdoor conference titles.
Kittley, now has 16 overall Big 12 titles – three in women's cross country, two in women's track and field, and 11 in men's track and field.
Texas Tech baseball drops final regular-season series
Speaking of Big 12 titles, that seems to be the only hope the Texas Tech baseball team has of reaching the NCAA Tournament after a massively disappointing regular season. After dropping two of three games at BYU in the final regular-season series of 2025, Tech will almost certainly have to win this week's Big 12 Tournament in Arlington, Texas, to keep its season alive.
Tech is now just 20-32 overall and 13-17 in the Big 12. They will be the No. 9 seed in the conference tournament, which will begin for the Red Raiders on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Central with a game against No. 8 seed Cincinnati. Earlier this year, Tech dropped two of three games to the Bearcats in Lubbock.
In Provo over the weekend, Tech lost the opener on Thursday, 13-4. Then, on Friday, Tech couldn't hold on to a late 5-3 lead as the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 6-5 win.
In the game, Damian Bravo was spectacular. Not only did he bash a homer, but he also robbed BYU of one with a leaping catch at the outfield wall.
Saturday, the Red Raiders salvaged the final game of the series with a 7-4 win. Jumping out to a 5-0 lead, they managed to hang on after a BYU rally thanks to two critical insurance runs in the ninth inning.
Those ninth-inning runs came via Logan Hughes' 19th homer of the season, most in the Big 12. He rocketed a ball over the right-center wall to give his team some much-needed breathing room.
This has been a disappointing Big 12 season for Tech. Of the ten conference series played, the Red Raiders dropped seven. Now, they'll have to reverse that trend if they have any hope of playing baseball past this week.
Men's golf headed back to NCAA Championships
One noteworthy development from earlier last week came from the men's golf program. Finishing the Urbana Regional in fifth place with a team score of -1, the Red Raiders qualified for the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.
This is the 17th time Tech has qualified for the NCAA Championships. Thirteen of those trips have come under the guidance of head coach Greg Sands.
Calum Scott led the way for the Red Raiders. He shot a -6 (207) for the three-round event. That was good enough to tie for fifth place in the individual competition.
There will be 30 teams participating in the NCAA Championships, including the Red Raiders. Play begins on Friday with every team guaranteed three rounds of stroke play.
Then, the field will be cut to 15 teams on Monday. After that, the top eight schools will participate in match play starting on Tuesday to determine the national champion. The best the Red Raiders have ever done in the championships is fifth place. Hopefully, they will do better than that this year.
