Here's a look at the latest headlines from around the Texas Tech athletic department for May 26, 2025.
Texas Tech softball to face SEC foe in Oklahoma City
Of course, the biggest story in Lubbock these days is the Texas Tech softball team's run to the program's first Women's College World Series. Now that the dust has settled on the Super Regionals and the field of eight for Oklahoma City is set, we have an opening-round opponent for the Red Raiders.
No. 12 national seed Texas Tech will face Ole Miss out of the SEC. The Rebels did not earn one of the 16 national seeds, so one must believe that Tech will be the favorite in this matchup.
However, that doesn't mean that Ole Miss is a pushover. They just beat No. 4 seed Arkansas on the road in the Super Regional round to get to Oklahoma City.
Still, this is a bit of an unexpected run for that program. After all, Ole Miss was just 11-13 in SEC play this season.
On the other hand, they did secure a win this season over Clemson (which made it to the Super Regional round), they took a regular-season series from Arkansas, they won a game at South Carolina (another Super Regional team), they won two games against World Series qualifier Florida, and they took a series from No. 23 Georgia on the road.
The Rebels have a potent offense. In their two Super Regional wins, they scored nine runs and seven runs, respectively.
The other teams in Tech's half of the bracket in OKC are No. 9 seed UCLA and No. 16 seed Oregon. It appears to be the less loaded side of the World Series bracket with No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Florida, No. 6 Texas, and No. 7 Tennessee on the other half of the draw.
Tech begins its World Series appearance on Thursday at 6 p.m. Central time. The game can be seen on ESPN2.
Texas Tech golf has massive Sunday showing to stay alive at NCAA Championships
Ranked No. 24 in the nation, the Texas Tech men's golf team was up against the wall heading into Sunday's round at the 2025 NCAA Championships. Fortunately, the Red Raiders stepped up to stay alive through the weekend with a huge team showing.
Shooting -2, 286 as a group, the Red Raiders tied No. 1 Auburn for the top score of the day (out of 20 teams) to jump 11 spots in the standings and move on to Monday's fourth round by finishing tied for eighth place overall. It is the first time since 2022 that Tech's men have been able to get to the fourth round of the event.
After Sunday, the field was cut to 15 teams. By finishing with a score of +12 (876) after the first three rounds, Tech remains alive in the pursuit of a title.
After Monday's round, the field will be trimmed to eight teams. Those teams will then participate in a match-play round on Tuesday.
That was made possible in large part by the work of seniors Charlie DeLong and Calum Scott. DeLong shot a 3-under-par 69 while Scott registered a 1-under-par 71.
It was a big rebound for DeLong, who improved by 10 shots on the day. He moved up 51 spots in the individual competition to sit in a tie for 36th overall.
Texas Tech basketball offers 4-star forward
Finally, the Texas Tech basketball program has extended an offer to 4-star Georgia high school product Colben Landrew. He is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound prospect in the class of 2026.
Landrew is rated by 247Sports as the No. 85 overall player in America and the No. 30 small forward in his class. In addition to Texas Tech, he has offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Clemson, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Ole Miss, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Xavier, and others.
