Ahead of Texas Tech’s matchup with the Utah Utes on Saturday, one of the biggest storylines worth wondering about was how the Red Raiders’ famed offense was going to perform on the road in a hostile environment against one of the most physical defenses in the country.
And after the Red Raiders put up 34 points on the board and beat the Utes by 24 points, it’s safe to say that things went well for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team. I mean, the Red Raiders got off to a sluggish start and couldn’t sustain offensive momentum, but Texas Tech was able to wear Utah down and exploded for 24 points in the fourth quarter.
Texas Tech, in total, gained 484 yards on the road against Utah, but 224 of those yards came in the fourth quarter, when Utah’s defense seemed to run out of steam and Texas Tech backup quarterback Will Hammond was thriving.
The Red Raiders had one of the best, most productive offenses in the Big 12 ahead of their matchup with the Utes defense.
That is still the case after the matchup. The Red Raiders have the best total offense in the Big 12 following week 4.
One of the best and most physical defenses in the Big 12 wasn’t enough to stop Texas Tech’s offense on Saturday
Here’s what the top 10 scoring offenses in the Big 12 look like after week 4:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 573 yards per game
- TCU Horned Frogs - 516 yards per game
- Baylor Bears - 477.3 yards per game
- Utah Utes - 453.5 yards per game
- BYU Cougars - 452 yards per game
- UCF Knights - 449.3 yards per game
- Cincinnati Bearcats - 438.3 yards per game
- Arizona Wildcats - 437.3 yards per game
- Kansas Jayhawks - 414 yards per game
- West Virginia Mountaineers - 408 yards per game
If Texas Tech can do that on the road against a team like Utah, then it seems likely that they’ll continue to do it throughout the season with the remaining Big 12 teams on the schedule. And it also seems likely that we’ll continue to see Texas Tech at the top of this list moving forward.
