Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football team currently have a share of the top spot in the Big 12 standings as the Red Raiders get prepped to face off against the Kansas Jayhawks this weekend. And that feels pretty good to see.

It’s very early, but the Red Raiders, at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play, have a shot to really take control of their standing in the conference in the coming weeks.

It really starts this weekend when the Red Raiders host Kansas. Let’s take a look at what the Big 12 looks like right now and then we can go into a little more detail as to why things look pretty good for the Red Raiders at the moment (though things can certainly change as we go).

2025 Big 12 standings: Texas Tech Red Raiders tied with BYU for No. 1 entering Week 7

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-0 overall, 2-0 Big 12)
  • BYU Cougars (5-0 overall, 2-0 Big 12)
  • Arizona State Sun Devils (4-1 overall, 2-0 Big 12)
  • Cincinnati Bearcats (4-1 overall, 2-0 Big 12)
  • Iowa State Cyclones (5-1 overall, 2-1 Big 12)
  • Baylor Bears (4-2 overall, 2-1 Big 12)
  • Kansas Jayhawks (4-2 overall, 2-1 Big 12)
  • Arizona Wildcats (4-1 overall, 1-1 Big 12)
  • Houston Cougars (4-1 overall, 1-1 Big 12)
  • TCU Horned Frogs (4-1 overall, 1-1 Big 12)
  • Utah Utes (4-1 overall, 1-1 Big 12)
  • Kansas State Wildcats (1-2 overall, 2-4 Big 12)
  • UCF Knights (3-2 overall, 0-2 Big 12)
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys (1-4 overall, 0-2 Big 12)
  • Colorado Buffaloes (2-4 overall, 0-3 Big 12)
  • West Virginia Mountaineers (2-4 overall, 0-3 Big 12)

McGuire and the Red Raiders really control their own destiny at this point. I mean, Texas Tech is in such a good position right now as we move forward. There’s obviously this game against Kansas, and the Jayhawks are clearly in the middle of the Big 12 standings right now (kind of in the upper middle class portion) and the Red Raiders will need to take this one seriously.

That said, there are really two other games that if Texas Tech can handle business in, things will be just fine. Because here’s what the rest of the schedule looks like for Tech right now:

  • Texas Tech vs Kansas - Oct. 11
  • Texas Tech at Arizona State - Oct 18
  • Texas Tech vs Oklahoma State - Oct. 25
  • Texas Tech at Kansas State - Nov. 1
  • Texas Tech vs BYU - Nov. 8
  • Texas Tech vs UCF - Nov. 15
  • Bye week - Nov. 22
  • Texas Tech at West Virginia - Nov. 29

Obviously the Red Raiders can’t overlook anyone, but if Texas Tech does what it’s supposed to down against Kansas, Arizona State, and BYU, I’m not really worried about any of the rest of those games. Not with the way things look right now. That could change, but Kansas State, Oklahoma State, UCF, and West Virginia look like absolute messes.
