As Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders get a little bit of rest this weekend thanks to the magic of a bye week, it looks like the Texas Tech football team has earned itself a spot tied for the No. 1 ranking in the Big 12.
Of course, it’s absolutely worth noting that this is early and standings will change, but by beating Utah in Texas Tech’s Big 12 conference opener, the Red Raiders got a conference win. Which is a good thing. And so far, there are only five teams in the Big 12 who have managed to get a conference win.
So, as a result, Texas Tech is now in a five-way tie for the No. 1 spot in the current Big 12 standings. Which is weird but hey we’ll take it.
Big 12 standings, September 24, 2025: No. 12 Texas Tech enters its bye week with a tie at the top of the Big 12
Let’s take a look at the Big 12 standings as we enter week 5 and the Texas Tech Red Raiders rest up during a bye week:
- Iowa State Cyclones (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
- Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
- Houston Cougars (3-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
- Arizona State Sun Devils (3-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
- Kansas Jayhawks (3-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12)
- Arizona Wildcats (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- BYU Cougars (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- UCF Knights (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- TCU Horned Frogs (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Cincinnati Bearcats (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (1-2 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
- Utah Utes (3-1 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
- Baylor Bears (2-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
- Colorado Buffaloes (2-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
- West Virginia Mountaineers (2-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
- Kansas State Wildcats (1-3 overall, 0-1 Big 12)
There’s plenty of football left to play, but it’s so good seeing Texas Tech maintaining a perfect 4-0 record so far this season. The Red Raiders have also maintained that perfect, unblemished record by way of four blowout wins, which is good.
Beating Utah was huge. While it may seem like it's too early for that game to matter too much right in this specific moment, it's worth remembering that beating the Utes allows Texas Tech to get a bit of an advantage over the Utah when it comes to the conference title race that we’ll see down the stretch of this season.
And given how it's the top two teams in the Big 12 standings that will represent the conference in the Big 12 championship game, getting to the top of the Big 12 standings is something that matters, no matter when you do that. Just get there and stay there.
