December has arrived and for college football fans that doesn't mean sleigh bells and wrapping paper but instead coaching changes and player movement via the transfer portal. Certainly, the Texas Tech football program is squarely in the middle of the madness this December with the firing of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and the departure of offensive coordinator Zach Kittley who is the new head coach at Florida Atlantic as of Monday.
So with all of the chaos surrounding the South Plains this week, it should be expected that this will be an active transfer portal season for the Red Raiders. Last offseason, the Red Raiders added 16 total transfers according to 247Sports.com but it wouldn't be a shock to see that number drop this year given that roster limits are about to drop to 105 next year.
Still, there will be plenty of activity with the roster this year. Thus, it would make sense to review what the rules for transfers are.
The transfer portal is simply an online database of players who are looking to find a new school to play for. That streamlines the recruiting process for coaches looking to find new talent.
Once a player has notified the compliance office at their current university of their intention to transfer, their name and contact information are published in the database. At that point, contact between players in the portal and other universities is permissible.
This year, players can enter the portal starting on December 9th and ending on December 24. Then, another window opens from April 16–April 25, 2025.
That means that the first window for football is set to open on Monday of next week. Therefore, players are already declaring their intentions to enter the portal.
As Texas Tech players enter the portal and as the program adds new names to the roster, it can be tough to keep up with all the departures and arrivals. So we are going to start a transfer tracker that will be updated with each development.
We will not add a player to the list of departures until that player has officially entered the portal or announced his intention to transfer. Thus, players who are rumored to be leaving or those who are reported to be on their way in or out won't show up until the move has been announced officially.
So with that said, here is a list of who is leaving Texas Tech and who is coming in through the portal.
