Right now, Gerry Glasco’s Texas Tech Red Raiders happen to be leading the home run race in the Big 12 and it’s by a pretty wide margin. We’re talking about a team that is able to go long seemingly whenever it wants to. And we’re talking about a team that has multiple power hitters all across the lineup.
In 36 games, the Texas Tech softball team has hit 75 home runs. That’s good for over two home runs per game right now. The next closest team is the Kansas Jayhawks, who have 64 home runs in 36 games (which is still a lot, but it’s 11 fewer home runs in the same number of games). Texas Tech just has a clear advantage over the rest of the conference right now.
Texas Tech’s power surge has produced 75 home runs in just 36 games, giving the Red Raiders an impressive lead over the rest of the Big 12
These aren’t exactly power rankings, but they are rankings of power for the Big 12:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 75 home runs in 36 games
- Kansas Jayhawks - 64 home runs in 36 games
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 63 home runs in 37 games
- Houston Cougars - 54 home runs in 39 games
- UCF Knights - 49 home runs in 38 games
- Iowa State Cyclones - 45 home runs in 33 games
- Arizona Wildcats - 44 home runs in 35 games
- Utah Utes - 39 home runs in 35 games
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - 37 home runs in 35 games
- BYU Cougars - 31 home runs in 32 games
- Baylor Bears - 22 home runs in 34 games
There’s a few interesting teams in this bunch. Take the Houston Cougars, for example, who are struggling as a whole, but have managed to hammer 53 home runs. That’s impressive, but their batting average of .279 isn’t all that impressive and they keep losing games.
Or the Arizona Wildcats, who have a .365 batting average but have managed to hit just 44 home runs. They’re getting a ton of contact, but aren’t that great at hitting home runs.
