Right now, the top-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders softball team and the No. 8 Baylor Bears are pretty familiar foes. Heading into Thursday’s Big 12 Tournament matchup between the Red Raiders and the Bears, these two teams just played a three-game series over the weekend.

And even though Texas Tech managed to take two of those games with relative ease, Baylor won a closely contested Game 2 matchup on Friday, which was fascinating and a little confusing. So, as we get set to see how the fourth matchup between these two will play out in a game between the Big 12’s best and a team fighting to extend its season, it’s important to take a look at some of the numbers.

Here’s the gap that exists between the Red Raiders and the Bears:

Inside the stats that show why the Baylor Bears face a steep climb against the Texas Tech softball team

Quite frankly, so much of what Texas Tech does at the plate should worry the Bears.

Here’s how they compare:

  • Batting average - Texas Tech: .390 vs Baylor: .277
  • Home runs - Texas Tech: 118 vs Baylor: 30
  • RBI - Texas Tech: 483 vs. Baylor: 216
  • Runs scored - Texas Tech: 528 vs. Baylor: 248

There’s a massive mismatch here that completely and totally works in Texas Tech’s favor. And it helps when players like KT Terry and Mia Williams are thriving. The former of whom has a .476 batting average and the latter who has a .442 batting average and 20 home runs on the season.

When we look in the circle, we’ll see a similarly impressive advantage for the Red Raiders.

  • Team ERA - Texas Tech: 1.69 vs. Baylor: 4.42
  • Strikeouts - Texas Tech: 393 vs. Baylor: 216
  • Walks - Texas Tech: 82 vs. Baylor: 200

The bulk of Texas Tech’s pitching strength comes from the fact that both NiJaree Canady and KT Terry have been so dominant this season. Canady has composed a 1.30 ERA and has managed to strike out 194 batters this season. Plus, you know, that perfect game against Baylor on Sunday. Terry, meanwhile, has a 1.39 ERA and 134 strikeouts on the season. The Bears just don’t have that sort of talent on their roster this season.
