Folks, it sure sounds like you’re not going to catch Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire overlooking the Houston Cougars this season. Part of that is almost certainly because Mcguire has admitted that he’s a huge fan of UH head coach Willie Fritz. There’s no way that doesn’t play a role in this attention that McGuire is paying to Houston.

Another part of that is because the head coach of the Red Raiders is certainly aware of the fact that the Houston Cougars are unbeaten right now. 4-0. McGuire doesn’t seem interested in looking past that at all. His team is 4-0. His next opponent is 4-0. Let’s not overlook anything there.

In fact, during a Monday afternoon press conference, the head coach of the Red Raiders made it clear that he’s been thinking highly of the Houston football program.

When asked if this should be thought of as a trap game and how McGuire was helping his team prepare for this week, the head coach of the Red Raiders made it clear that this isn’t a team that Texas Tech can afford to overlook at all.

“They’re 4-0, so I don’t think we’ll be worried about any kind of trap game,” McGuire explained. “You know, they’re a really good football team.”

One reason for that is the way the Coogs are playing defense this season. The Red Raiders plucked their defensive coordinator away after last season, getting Shiel Wood to move out to Lubbock. So far, that has worked out well for the Red Raiders, but it hasn’t totally derailed UH.

“Defensively they’ve done a great job of stopping the run,” Texas Tech’s head coach identified. “They’re one of the top teams in the country on defense, they’ve done a good job of creating turnovers.”

And of course, McGuire is certainly aware of the Coogs’ record.

“You know, they’re 4-0 for a reason,” he said. “Willie Fritz does a good job of not beating himself, his team does a really good job. They’re very disciplined, so it’s going to be a really good game.”
