There’s one more regular season game to this season for Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Just one more time for the Texas Tech football team to play before we see how the matchup for the Big 12 championship gets set up.
With a win, the Red Raiders are in for that Big 12 title game. Just one team stands in the way of McGuire and the Red Raiders getting a shot to compete for a Big 12 championship for the first time in program history.
So, yeah, it’s a pretty big deal that Texas Tech is heading to West Virginia this weekend. The Mountaineers aren’t very good, but this game has some pretty big implications for Texas Tech and it’d be great to see the Red Raiders come out on top.
During a press conference, Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood got to talk a bit about this matchup.
Here’s what Texas Tech defensive coordinator Shiel Wood had to say about West Virginia’s offense ahead of game
When asked about what sort of challenges the Red Raiders might face from the West Virginia offense, Wood noted the way that Rich Rod’s offense likes to go fast.
“Tempo, I think they’re playing really hard and I think they put a premium on that,” Wood explained.
West Virginia’s offense does try to move up and down the field in a hurry. It’s also worth noting the way in which Rodriguez wants his offense to operate.
“So, they want to run the football,” Wood continued. “They want to go fast and I think they do a nice job, you know, distributing the ball on the perimeter to multiple playmakers as well.”
Of the 72.4 plays per game that West Virginia runs on a weekly basis, the Mountaineers are running the ball 45.5 times per game while attempting just 26.8 passes per game. This is an offense that wants to run up and down the field and move quickly.
But, well, there are plenty of issues with the offense. The West Virginia offense is averaging just 364.9 yards per game. So while the tempo might help out, this is an offense that Texas Tech should be able to lock down. We’ll see how it pans out though.
