Though the college basketball world is now focused on the start of the NCAA Tournament, another important aspect of the sport, the transfer portal, is also heating up as players of teams that have seen their seasons end are already making choices about next season. In fact, a standout player with ties to the Texas Tech basketball team has just announced his intention to enter the portal leading many to believe that he could wind up calling Lubbock home next season.

Obi Agbim, a 6-foot-3 guard who led the Wyoming Cowboys in scoring this season announced Monday that he is not returning to Wyoming and will look for a new place to play his final season of college basketball. A native of Aurora, Colorado, he averaged 17.6 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game in 2024-25.

Of course, Texas Tech assistant coach Jeff Linder was the head coach at Wyoming for the past four seasons before joining Grant McCasland's staff this past offseason. Thus, many people are speculating that he might be able to help bring Agbim to the South Plains.

Now, it is important to know that Agbim played only one season at Wyoming after previously playing two seasons at Fort Lewis College and one season at Northeastern Junior College. Therefore, he never played for Linder in Laramie.

However, there is still a tie to Texas Tech on the Wyoming coaching staff. Current Cowboys head coach, Sundance Wicks was Linder's top assistant for three years at Wyoming and it is fair to think that the two still have at least a working relationship.

Now, whether or not Wicks will help steer Agbim to Lubbock is anyone's guess. However, at the least, he can provide Linder and McCasland some insight as to what type of player they might be getting.

Texas Tech will need to find a player with Agbim's skillset this offseason

Aside from the Wyoming/Texas Tech connection, the reality is that Agbim's game is exactly what Tech needs to add to the roster after this season. That's because he's a deadly 3-pointer shooter and Tech will be losing a ton of production from the 3-point arc.

Agbim shot 43.7% from deep this season to lead the Mountain West Conference. He averaged 2.8 makes and 6.3 attempts from beyond the arc in 2024-25.

To put that in perspective, those numbers would have led the Red Raiders this season. Chance McMillian leads Tech with 2.3 makes and 5.3 attempts from downtown thus far.

Of course, McMillian, Kerwin Walton, and Elijah Hawkins will all be out of eligibility once this season concludes. Between them, that trio of guards averages 5.5 3-point makes and 14 attempts per game.

Now, next season, Tech will return Christian Anderson, who averages 2.1 3s per game this year as a true freshman. However, the offense that Linder is the architect of in Lubbock relies on having multiple 3-point weapons on the floor at a time. Thus, even with Anderson back to run the point guard spot, Tech will need to look for more outside shooting to add to next year's team.

So keep an eye on Agbim and his recruitment because he could be a target for the Red Raiders. In addition to the connection between Tech and Wyoming, he also fits the profile of a player that would be exactly what Tech will be in the market for this offseason.
