With a loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Texas Tech Red Raiders fell behind the leaders in the Big 12 a little bit in the conference standings. It’s not that Joey Mcguire and the Red Raiders are out of the running for the conference championship game, but Texas Tech is behind teams like BYU and Cincinnati (the latter of whom has been sneaky good this season).

Texas Tech would benefit greatly from getting someone in conference to beat either the Cougars or the Bearcats.

And that’s why this game between BYU and the Iowa State Cyclones matters a bit to the folks in Lubbock.

How does this game impact Texas Tech? Can Iowa State help the Red Raiders out?

The BYU Cougars (and the Cincinnati Bearcats) are ahead of Texas Tech in the Big 12 standings. And given that the Red Raiders fell short on the road against the Arizona State Sun Devils, that matters a bit at this point in the season.

The Red Raiders can still win out the rest of the way and just flat out earn their way into the conference championship game, but it would be nice to see someone somewhere cause the Cougars to stumble a bit. This game between the Cyclones and BYU is a pretty good opportunity at doing just that.

If Iowa State wins, that will create a bit of a logjam at the top for BYU and Texas Tech. The Cougars would join the ranks of the one-loss Big 12 teams, alongside the Red Raiders and the Houston Cougars and aforementioned Sun Devils (who will play against one another later this evening).

If BYU wins, things remain the same for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech will get a shot at the Cougars in a few weeks as BYU comes to Lubbock. That’ll be a good chance to prove what the Red Raiders’ ceiling looks like. But still, some help would be nice.

Both Iowa State and BYU rely pretty heavily on their defenses to cause a headache or two for opposing teams. Both the Cyclones and the Cougars have managed to get to this point in the season by playing some pretty disciplined football. These teams don’t make a ton of mistakes. And it’ll be interesting to see how they match up in Ames today.
