Well, Texas Tech’s road game against Utah has been interesting in ways that I don’t think many people expected. The first half between the Red Raiders and the Utes has been dominated by defenses so far. After an early scoring burst from the Texas Tech offense, both of these defenses have found ways to clamp down and shut things down.

Thankfully, that also includes Texas Tech’s defense vs. Utah’s offense. Something that Red Raider fans probably aren’t all that used to seeing, but Texas Tech has found a way to really shut down Utah’s offense (that was one of the most impressive in the Big 12 entering today.

One of the most interesting aspects of Texas Tech’s defense looking so impressive early on in this game is the way the Red Raiders have forced, and also recovered, two fumbles from Utah in nearly identical fashion.

Texas Tech’s defense is off to a hot start against Utah as the Red Raiders have already forced and recovered two fumbles

With a little over four minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Utes were in a second down situation with seven yards to go while at their own 44-yard line.

And after a completed 10-yard pass to Ryan Davis from Devon Dampier, Texas Tech’s very own Ben Roberts managed to punch the ball loose. John Curry then scooped the ball up at the Texas Tech 46-yard line and gave the Red Raiders with a shot to move the ball.

And then there was another fumble!

On second down with three yards to go from the Utah 49-yard line, Jacob Rodriguez forced a fumble at the Texas Tech 48-yard line. Anthony Holmes Jr. was able to snag the ball and give the Red Raiders possession.

Things have been a little sloppy at times for the Texas Tech offense, but that shouldn’t be all that shocking when considering how good Utah’s defense has been. And that stinks. But, it’s encouraging to see the Red Raiders find a way to clamp down on Utah’s offense. These fumbles are huge for the Red Raiders.
