Behren Morton and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are starting to show just how good and explosive Mack Leftwich’s offense can be. Texas Tech’s first drive against the Utah Utes defense was executed just about perfectly and it gave the Red Raiders a nice 7-0 lead against Utah while on the road.
Tech, starting at its own 15-yard line, got started thanks to a 3-and-out from the Utah offense. And in seven plays and a little over three minutes of game time, the Red Raiders were able to travel 85 yards down the field to claim that early lead.
Things weren’t looking all that promising for the Red Raiders after the first handful of plays. A quarterback keeper was stopped short and then a 5-yard pass was pretty much erased thanks to a false start penalty that pushed the Red Raiders back.
But it didn’t matter all that much. Things improved in a hurry.
Texas Tech is off to a solid start against Utah thanks to some impressive explosive moments on its first drive
Morton was able to connect with J’Koby Williams, who then hauled the ball downfield and managed to routinely avoid tackles time and time again, pushing the Red Raiders to the Utah 12-yard line. 73 yards. That’s a lot of yards!

After that impressive explosive play, and a handful of relatively unimpressive moments, Cameron Dickey was able to catch a 12-yard pass from Morton, pushing the Red Raiders down to the Utah 1-yard line. From there, Dickey was able to dash into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run.

And that put the Red Raiders up 7-0 early on in the game.
On the drive, Morton completed three of his four passes for a total of 90 yards. Williams hauled in that one impressive pass play that resulted in 73 of those yards. Dickey had a couple of catches and a rushing touchdown. Oh, and Texas Tech converted on both of its third downs.
This is exactly what Texas Tech needed from its first drive on the road in a hostile environment. Now the Red Raiders just need to continue with this sort of energy and momentum against a team like Utah.
