For me, one of the most exciting things from Texas Tech’s thrilling and headline-grabbing offseason was the addition of Mack Leftwich to be the new offensive coordinator of the Red Raiders. And it’s not that Zach Kittley was a bad offensive coordinator for the Red Raiders, but rather I’m just fascinated to see how Leftwich’s system works with the talent in Lubbock.

Between the vertical passing routes, the tempo, and the way the Red Raiders will be attacking defenses all throughout the season, it’s going to give Texas Tech plenty of opportunities for big plays.

However, if the Red Raiders aren’t executing effectively, there’s going to be an abundance of opportunities for opposing defenses to take advantage of Texas Tech’s mistakes and mishaps. And that’s not what we want.

Luckily, that wasn’t the case for Texas Tech in Week 1. Against the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions, Leftwich’s offense clicked without issue. And it sure seems like Texas Tech’s head coach would agree with that assessment.

Texas Tech’s offense and tempo certainly helped the Red Raiders get a solid win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Week 1

“I thought we executed really well,” McGuire said.

Short, simple, to the point. I like it. I agree with it.

But wait, there’s more.

“I though, you know, tempo wise, it was a point that Will Jadose and Howard Sampson at halftime said, ‘hey, that tempo is for real, coach. We’re sitting there and we’re pancaking somebody and bearing their weels’,” McGuire said.

And while all of that is going on?

“Yelling gas, gas, gas, to get the next play going,” McGuire said. “And so, I was proud of that.”

That’s definitely something to be proud of.

I suspect his system will work well all season, but it’s hard to imagine it working this well throughout the year. That said, if Texas Tech is able to execute like this down the stretch, this season is going to be a ton of fun for Red Raider fans.
