Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are in a pretty interesting spot heading into the 2025 college football season. The Red Raiders will enter the season with one of the most talented rosters in the Big 12 as a result of the NIL-powered transfer portal-heavy recruiting this offseason, but it remains to be seen if Tech can hit the ground running with all that talent.
Because of all of the headlines and attention that Texas Tech has received all throughout the offseason as a result of that dynamic recruiting effort, it seems likely that this group will be receiving a ton of scrutiny. They’re going to be under a microscope for a lot of folks.
Especially since McGuire is averaging just under eight wins a season so far as a head coach at this level. People are going to expect him to step it up this season with all of the talent that he’s accumulated. And how is he handling those expectations? Heck, what are the expectations that TTU has for itself this year? How have those been defined?
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire explains the expectations that the Red Raiders have for themselves this season
“I know there’s a lot of expectations on the team,” McGuire admitted. “We look at it as opportunities.”
That’s a really good line, folks. I mean, that’s top tier coachspeak that is worth buying into. I’m here for it. Definitely view these expectations as opportunities. What a great line from Texas Tech’s head coach.
“Jackson Richards, a good friend of mine, went to Texas Tech, son played at Texas Tech, and he sent me that text,” McGuire said.
Ah, well, what a great line from Jackson Richards. And credit to McGuire for not taking credit for something he can’t take credit for.
“It’s all perspective and we look at it that we have a great opportunity,” Texas Tech’s head coach noted. “I think this conference is really strong, there’s a lot of teams that have some big opportunities this year to really make a statement and we’re planning on being one of them.”
You know, that’s a solid mindset to have. And this team has the talent to make a splash in this conference this season. Now we’ll see how it all pans out.
