It shouldn’t shock anyone that with the season the Texas Tech Red Raiders have had this year that Red Raider head coach Joey McGuire might appreciate an opportunity to get his players as healthy as possible.
Given the injuries that Texas Tech has had to navigate, any possible way of reducing injury risk would seem like a pretty high priority for McGuire and the Red Raiders. That seems especially topical when looking at the quarterback picture for Texas Tech given that Behren Morton isn’t fully healthy and his backup Will Hammond Jr. is out for the rest of the season.
So, when McGuire was asked about whether or not he’d prefer to have a home game in Lubbock to start Texas Tech’s stint in the College Football Playoff or if he’d like to see the Red Raiders instead get a chance to have a bye, it shouldn’t shock anyone to hear what he chose.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire discusses the College Football Playoff seeding and a chance for the Red Raiders to get a bye
In a recent press conference, McGuire made it clear that he just wants his team to get into the playoff, but he’d like the Red Raiders to be as healthy as possible.
“The good thing is, no matter what happens, it’s going to be great because if we get an opportunity, if we do what we’re supposed to do and take care of business these next couple weeks, that means we’re in the playoffs,” McGuire said. “And we get to play at home, which is awesome.”
The head coach of the Texas Tech football team continued, showing both appreciation for even having this opportunity and also the desire to see the Red Raiders healthy if possible.
“You know, I think it’s one of those deals, if you give me a chance to have a bye and have as much time as possible for this team to be as healthy as possible,” McGuire continued. “One less game to where you’re not getting a lot of gray hair or losing hair worried about somebody else getting hurt, I think that would probably be me, I’d rather do that.”
AND THAT IS ABSOLUTELY FAIR.
It’d be great to get a College Football Playoff game in Lubbock, but it might be a bit more important for the Red Raiders to reduce risk at any point possible. Regardless, Texas Tech just needs to make the field right now.
“At the end of the day, we’re just trying to get in, get in the mix,” Texas Tech’s head coach stated. “If we’re in the mix, then good things are going to happen.”
