While plenty of people have been thinking about football lately, many folks in the state of Texas have been focused on the recent flooding that has impacted numerous communities throughout Central Texas.

And following the recent devastating flooding throughout the Texas Hill Country, the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders made sure to show his support for those who have been impacted.

While at the 2025 edition of Big 12 Football Media Days (an annual event that helps everybody get set for the coming college football season, Joey McGuire took the chance to remind everyone about what many Texans are currently having to navigate.

Over 100 people died during flooding in Texas and over 100 people are still missing in Kerr County alone. And as Texans are impacted by this disaster, it’s going to be hard for many to focus much energy on football. Understandably so.

And that’s one reason I greatly appreciate the way McGuire started his comments at Big 12 media days.

“Football is just right around the corner,” McGuire noted. “Before I talk about my team, being a proud Texan and being nowhere else, I just want to again, we put this out the other day, but our prayers are with everybody in Central Texas.”

“I have family that live in those areas and have had different alumni reach out to me that have had young ladies and kids going to different camps,” Texas Tech’s head coach said.

For those that might be unaware, that part of Texas has many summer camps and there were over 20 children and camp counselors from Camp Mystic who died in the floods.

“I just want to say, that at Texas Tech, we’re praying for you guys,” McGuire shared. “I can’t imagine. Debbie and I have talked about it as parents of what they’re going through and just want you to know that you are in our thoughts and our prayers.”

It’s hard to comprehend everything that has happened throughout this and to fully understand what these families and communities are now having to wrestle with.

I appreciate McGuire taking the moment to acknowledge this and note that people in Texas are mourning and suffering right now. Because that is absolutely something that shouldn’t go unnoticed.
