Through the first four games of the season, the Texas Tech Red Raiders have looked pretty dang impressive. Especially so for a team that was assembled in a way that involved the injection of a ton of new talent thanks to a number of players moving to Lubbock through the Transfer Portal. But while things have been impressive, they certainly haven’t been perfect.

If you asked just about a rather large group of Texas Tech football fans what the most frustrating part of this season has been, you’d likely find a number of answers all centered around the same sort of problem: penalties.

The Texas Tech football team has experienced a ton of issues with penalties. While the Red Raiders have played some really incredible football through the first few weeks of the season, they really need to address all of the penalties.

In four games, Texas Tech has 37 penalties for 317 yards. The Red Raiders’ opponents have had 14 penalties for 100 yards.

That’s an issue!

And Joey McGuire is aware of that.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire notes how the Red Raiders need to avoid penalties and play disciplined football

McGuire, during a Monday press conference, was asked about how close the Red Raiders were to playing a complete game. And the head coach of the Texas Tech football team is looking for some notable improvements from his team.

“We haven’t been close,” McGuire explained. “The one thing that we’ve talked about a lot and we’ve got to do a better job, but we’re one of the most penalized teams in the country.”

That’s a fair thing to discuss and to want to address. Certainly.

“Until we get past that, the penalties, we’ve talked about it before, the pre-snap penalties is what kills me,” McGuire said. “Because that’s directly about us not being disciplined before the ball is snapped.”

What’s good is there are still opportunities to improve in this area. And the Red Raiders can start with that this weekend.
