Aided by the support of an impressively invested booster base, Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders drastically overhauled the way their roster is assembled out in Lubbock. McGuire, who was at one point a longtime high school head coach in the state of Texas, took advantage of the Transfer Portal this offseason and did so in an impressive way.
McGuire and Texas Tech raiding the Transfer Portal has been a massive point of discussion for many college football fans across the country throughout the past few months. It’s something that plenty of people have been interested in.
During Big 12 Media Days, McGuire was given the opportunity to discuss the way Texas Tech went through the portal and how the Red Raiders were able to pick up players at seemingly every given opportunity.
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire discusses the Red Raiders’ impressive approach to sifting through the Transfer Portal
“It’s been a fun offseason,” McGuire said. “We were really aggressive whenever it came to the portal and meeting some of our needs for the football team.”
One of those needs being a bunch of help on the defensive side of the ball. Texas Tech built a brand new defensive line, picked up a bunch of help in the secondary, and then assembled a group to (theoretically) help the Red Raiders have a very real shot at competing for the Big 12 this season.
And yeah, that’s been fun. For Texas Tech fans at least.
“I’ve been really proud of those guys for always looking at like what’s the feeling in the locker room,” Texas Tech’s head coach explained. “Culturally, the standard that we practice at, but then other things like this is the third semester in a row that we’ve had a 3.0 or better as a GPA.”
Hey, good grades are important. And the most impressive aspect of those good grades?
“We brought in all those new guys, a lot of them have already graduated from college but are still taking 12 hours and we’re able to do that in the classroom,” McGuire noted.
That’s a cool thing to be able to brag about. There are obviously going to be plenty of questions that McGuire and Texas Tech face throughout this season. But so far it seems like everything is going well for Texas Tech. And let’s celebrate that as we get those moments.
