As the 2025 college football season continues on, the Texas Tech Red Raiders continue to do more than enough to impress folks all across the country. And while it isn’t showing up in the AP Poll or the Coaches Poll just yet, the Red Raiders are getting plenty of recognition for their efforts when it comes to in-season college football playoff projections.
Joey McGuire and Texas Tech are unbeaten at 4-0 so far and sure look like the best team in the Big 12 (even though it is very, very early) right now. Should that continue, the Red Raiders will have a chance to make it to the playoff without much of a problem.
And at least one playoff projection has the Texas Tech football team meeting up with a familiar face in the first round.
Sports illustrated’s College Football Playoff projection lines Texas Tech up with Oklahoma Sooners in 1st round matchup in Lubbock
Bryan Fischer over at Sports Illustrated seems to believe Texas Tech will be good enough to earn the No. 6 seed in the 2025 College Football Playoff. At least he believes that at the moment. I’m sure he reserves the right to change his mind on that.
And if Texas Tech can get that seeding, they’ll be matched up with the No. 11 seed. In the current iteration of Fischer’s hypothetical bracket, that means the Red Raiders would face off against the Oklahoma Sooners. Long live the old Big 12.
It’s a fun hypothetical. I have no clue if we’ll get it (or who would even win if we got that matchup). But it’d be fun to see. In this projected bracket, if the Red Raiders were to win that December matchup with the Sooners in Lubbock, they’d then get to face the No. 3 seed Ole Miss Rebels in the Sugar Bowl. I’m sure that’d be a pretty rowdy game to watch.
