As the Texas Tech softball team continues its stay in Oklahoma City as part of the 2025 Women’s College World Series, the Red Raiders got off to a pretty good start on Thursday. Technically speaking, half of the teams got off to a good start in OKC. The other half of the teams didn’t have as much fun Thursday evening.

It’s a little complicated. And also it’s very simple! Let’s take a quick look and go over what happened on Day 1 of the 2025 Women’s College World Series.

Here’s what you need to know:

Who won on Day 1 of the WCWS?

Technically speaking, a few teams did. First and foremost, we’re going to acknowledge that the Texas Tech Red Raiders jumped into the winner’s bracket by beating the Ole Miss Rebels and shutting them out in the process.

Another team from the Lone Star State also happened to win as the Texas Longhorns managed to get a shutout victory of their own, handing the Florida Gators a 3-0 beating and moving on into the winner’s bracket in the process.

And if that formula of “a former Big 12 team that made the move into the SEC beating a longtime member of that conference” sounds good to you, then you might enjoy how the Oklahoma Sooners came back to beat the Tennessee Lady Vols 4-3 on a walkoff home run.

If you happened to stay up late, then you got to witness another walkoff win as the Oregon Ducks lost to the UCLA Bruins thanks to a home run that allowed UCLA to come out on top 4-2 and get into the winner’s bracket in the process.

What do Texas Tech fans need to know about Day 1 of the Women’s College World Series?

NiJaree Canady was incredible and was a huge reason (though not the only reason) that Texas Tech came out on top of Ole Miss. The Rebels also had a really impressive pitching performance and I, for one, would appreciate it if the Red Raiders would find a way to score more runs moving forward, especially against a team like UCLA.

Speaking of UCLA, the Bruins (and the Sooners) both proved to be really resilient in their respective wins. Texas Tech wasn’t the only team that looked good on Thursday. The Red Raiders will need to consistently perform at a high level in Oklahoma City.

With Tech’s win, and the fact that the Bruins also managed to come out on top, we will soon see Texas Tech take on UCLA in the 2025 Women’s College World Series.
