Texas Tech’s expected starting quarterback for next season is apparently entering treatment for gambling addiction. ESPN’s Pete Thamel cited a statement from Texas Tech noting that the Red Raiders’ QB was stepping away from the team.
Thamel continued to state that Sorbsy has reportedly made “thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app.”
Which obviously is going to be an issue for the Red Raiders as the NCAA is apparently examining this situation. Thamel noted that sources have told him that Sorsby bet on Indiana Hoosiers football while he was redshirting as a true freshman back in 2022.
Shehan Jeyarajah for CBS Sports noted that this investigation could impact Sorsby’s opportunity to see the field for the Red Raiders. Jeyarajah also quoted a statement from Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire, who noted that the Red Raiders “love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help. Taking this step requires courage and our primary focus is on him as a person.”
In his statement, McGuire also explained that the Red Raiders are “behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

In Texas Tech’s statement, the Red Raiders noted that they were not going to issue further comments on Sorsby’s availability or the progress of treatment. The Red Raiders also requested that the media and also the general public to respect Sorsby privacy throughout this process.
In his reporting, Thamel did note that law enforcement is not involved in the investigation of this. It’s just the NCAA at this time. Thamel also explained that Sorsby has not been linked to anyone trying to influence the outcome of a game.
This is a story that will likely draw attention all throughout the offseason with periodic updates to come regarding Sorsby’s availability to plate for the Red Raiders.
