It was announced yesterday that Texas Tech football coaches will be under one-year contracts starting this season, with percentage increases as a stipulation to the recently signed contracts.

Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported on the story yesterday, with all the contract information per a records request with the university.

The contracts apply only to Tech assistant coaches, with the exception of defensive coordinator David Gibbs, whose two-year contract valued at $1.1 million signed in January is still being honored.

Here are the new contract valuations from highest to lowest, per A-J Media. It’s important to note that these contracts were reportedly signed “between early June and early July,” and are valid from May 1, 2015 until January 31, 2016.

  • Davis Gibbs — Defensive Coordinator — $1.1 million
  • Eric Morris — co-Offensive Coordinator — $260,000 (base salary)
  • Mike Smith — co-Defensive Coordinator — $260,000 (base salary from $240,000)
  • Mike Jinks — Assistant Head Coach — $240,000 (a 12 percent base salary increase from $215,000)

According to the report, the salaries for assistant coaches of Texas Tech Football are to increase by three percent annually. However, between now and last year, the salaries increased by an average of six percent, or from $2.205 million in 2014, to $2.345 million for 2015.

While head coach Kliff Kingsbury has had several assistants depart throughout the three years he’s been at the helm for the Red Raiders (most notably in Matt Wallerstedt and Sonnie Cumbie), he’s been able to retain six of the nine assistants he started out with when he compiled the first coaching staff of the Kingsbury Era.

With all the hard work the staff and players have been putting into to hopefully resurrecting the Red Raiders from its abysmal 4-8 2014 campaign, it’s good to know the staff being is being incentivized to increase its productivity.
