10. Your church experience on Sunday morning depends on what happened on Saturday afternoon.
Lubbock, Texas is one of the few cities in America in which you might find yourself in a traffic jam on Sunday morning. Most Red Raiders find their way to church on Sunday morning, but whether they are there to worship, repent, or rage against God’s cruelty depends on what happened to the Red Raiders on Saturday.
In fact, church attendance throughout West Texas rises and falls with the success of the Texas Tech football season. After a thrilling victory it is much easier to get up the next morning and put on a smile as you rejoice in song.
However, when the team goes 4-8 it is much more likely that most on Sundays you will be too hung over from drowning your sorrows after the game to even think about going to church. And everyone can agree that even a victory hangover is much less painful than one following an 82-27 loss to your most hated rival.
The cliché states that football is a religion in Texas. For many Red Raider fans, the other forms of religion practiced and observed on Sunday morning will be impacted by the gifts or curses handed down by the college football gods.
