Kliff Kingsbury has strong words for Arkansas’ coach Bret Bielema

Most football fans know the significance of the word “karma” well. But I’m not trying to resurrect old sports memories (Twitter reminds us daily), instead, I want to discuss why Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury had such strong words for Arkansas Razorbacks’ head coach Bret Bielema in the press conference following Texas Tech’s 35-24 win on Saturday night in Fayetteville, Ark.

Here’s the clip:

“I just think the physicality. That’s a program that prides itself on being physical,” Kingsbury said. “At the Texas High School Coaches convention this summer, he stood up and said, ‘If you don’t play with a fullback we’ll kick your ass. If you throw it 70 times a game, we’ll kick your ass.’ He just got his ass kicked… twice in a row and probably next week by A&M as well, so that did feel good.”

While the question that prompted the response Kingsbury gave is unknown at this point as sound tends to be an issue during post-game pressers, I’m sure we’ll find out during Monday morning’s annual press conference where coaches and standout players will address the media.

With that said, the Texas High School Coaches Convention Kingsbury was referring to is an annual convention that over 12,000 players, coaches, parents, and fans attend every summer in Houston. The guest speakers at the July conference included Arkansas’ head football coach Bret Bielema, Southern Methodist’s Chad Morris, and Mississippi State basketball coach Ben Howland. I imagine Bielema’s speech contained all or part of Kingsbury’s paraphrased offerings, including, “if you don’t play with a fullback, we’ll kick your ass…” and “if you try to throw the ball 70 times a game, we’ll kick your ass.” I could not find the speech Bielema delivered, however, if any of our readers can find a clip, please let us know.

Regardless of the context, the comments were directed towards Texas Tech, and Kingsbury wanted to make sure the entire nation understood just how closely Kingsbury was paying attention this offseason.

Most can consider this a signature win for Kingsbury and Texas Tech, especially against an SEC team. But I think this will only make the Red Raiders hungrier for bigger wins against stronger opponents from here on out, as the bar bas been set.

And I’m sure Texas A&M appreciates the vote of confidence from its former offensive coordinator headed into next week.
