No. 15 James Gray (Running Back 1986-1989)

One of the most productive running backs in Texas Tech history is the 15th greatest Texas Tech football player.

The man who rushed for the most touchdowns in Texas Tech history (52) was a second team all-American in 1989. Furthermore, he is the school’s second leading rusher with 4,066 yards in his career.

In the 1989 All-American Bowl, Gray rushed for what was at the time a bowl record 280 yards as Texas Tech beat the Duke Blue Devils. In the 49-21 blowout, Gray also had four touchdown runs to his credit.

The victory was the first postseason victory for Texas Tech since the 1973 Gator Bowl. Gray was named the game’s MVP and cemented his place among the greats of Texas Tech football history.
