No. 8 Byron Hanspard (Running back 1994-1996)

The top running back to ever play at Texas Tech, Byron Hanspard is 8th on our list of the 50 greatest players in Texas Tech history. One of the top recruits in America coming out of high school, landing Hanspard was a major coup for the Red Raiders.

By the time Hanspard left Texas Tech in 2006 (after his junior season) he was the school’s all-time leading rusher with 4,219 yards, a number that still stands as the top mark in Red Raider history. In 1996, Hanspard ran for over 2,000 yards becoming only the sixth player in college football to do so. He was also awarded the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back.

With incredible speed, unparalleled vision and soft hands, Hanspard would be the perfect running back for today’s style of spread offenses. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound native of Dallas was a singular talent the likes of which Texas Tech may not see again.
