Texas Tech Had Almost As Much Success Against Bob Stoops As Anyone
2005: Texas Tech 23-Oklahoma 21
Another unforgettable game in the Texas Tech/OU series came in 2005. With a trip to the Cotton Bowl on the line, the Sooners came to Lubbock featuring all-American running back Adrian Peterson.
However, the Texas Tech running back, Taurean Henderson would steal the show. His two-yard touchdown plunge on the game’s final play would be reviewed by replay officials only to be upheld giving the Red Raiders the win.
The final drive of the game was filled with controversy. In addition to Henderson’s touchdown run, another critical play had to be reviewed.
Red Raider quarterback Cody Hodges connected with Danny Amendola on fourth-and-three. The pass was deflected at the line but Amendola wrestled the ball away from an OU defender.
The ball was spotted just past the line to gain, much to the chagrin of the Stoops and the Sooners. Officials reviewed this play as well and kept the ball at the spot marked on the field allowing the drive to continue. 31 seconds later, Henderson scored his controversial touchdown to seal the win.
The final drive was one of the most gut-wrenching in Texas Tech history. Three plays were reviewed (including a completion from Hodges to Joel Filani that was overturned) leaving fans to argue over the officiating for years to come. Bob Stoops though took the high road after the game.
"“I didn’t see [Henderson’s touchdown] and I’m not going to sit here and criticize,” he said he said. “We have a system in place and you hope that it works and it makes the calls that are correct.”"
Henerson was the star of the game rushing for 109 yards and a score. Hodges went 24/37 for 232 yards and two touchdowns against the top defense in the Big 12.
The victory was the first for Mike Leach against his former team and the first for Tech over OU since 1999. With the win, Texas Tech earned the right to play in the Cotton Bowl for the first time since 1994.
One other famous moment from this game happened in the postgame when a rowdy Texas Tech fan heckled OU fullback J.D. Runnels with cries of “Go Raiders!” while Runnels tired to conduct a radio interview. It was a fitting end to one of the wildest days in the history of Texas Tech football.
