2011: Texas Tech 41-Oklahoma 38

Texas Tech’s most improbable win versus Stoops and the Sooners came in Norman where Bob Stoops lost just nine times in 110 games.  On October 24th, the Red Raiders won for the first time at Oklahoma and put an end to the Sooner’s 39-game home winning streak.

Tech quarterback Seth Doege came out hot and threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns in the 41-38 win.  Tech’s other hero that night was receiver Alex Torres who caught four passes for 94 yards and three touchdowns.

Tech built a 24-7 halftime lead as the home faithful sat in stunned silence.  The crowd was already agitated by a 95-minute weather delay that forced them to take shelter on the stadium concourse as a lightning storm rolled through.

The Sooners would eventually come to life in the fourth quarter outscoring Tech 21-10 but it was too late.  The win was Texas Tech’s first ever over a top-5 team on the road but it came at a cost.

Inexplicably, the Red Raiders were unable to capitalize on the momentum from this victory.  Tech would not win another game in 2011 eventually missing out on a bowl game for the first time since 1999.  It was also the first season in the Big 12 era that Texas Tech failed to reach six wins, the longest streak in the conference.

The Red Raiders were four touchdown underdogs and had lost the previous two games to ranked opponents making this win even more improbable.  Entering the game, Stoops had lost just twice at home and only one visiting team had led in Norman at any point in the previous 20 games.

This was one of the most frustrating losses of Stoops’ career.  His undefeated season came to an end and the Sooners would eventually finish the season outside the top-10.

Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, this would be the last time Tech would best Bob Stoops.  He ended his career on a five-game winning streak against Texas Tech including last year’s unbelievable 66-59 shootout in Lubbock.

Bob Stoops is an icon in college football.  He set the standard against which all Big 12 coaches will be measured.  So Texas Tech fans should take a bit of pride in the fact that the Red Raiders five wins against Stoops was the second most any team could muster versus the legendary “Big Game Bob”.
