The Texas Tech football program added yet another piece to its 2018 recruiting class on Thursday with the verbal commitment of running back Devin Brumfield.

Devin Brumfield, a three-star running back from Covington, Louisiana became the 18th prospect in the 2018 class to verbally commit to the Texas Tech football program.  The 5-foot-10, 219-pound runner announced his decision via Twitter on Thursday.

(Obviously, the first task for Brumfield will be to learn the correct name of Texas Tech University.  However, we will not dwell on that aspect of his tweet.)

247Sports.com has Brumfield rated as the No. 58 running back in the nation and the 44th overall player in the state of Louisiana.  He chose Texas Tech over power-5 offers from Missouri, Utah, Mississippi State and West Virginia.

Interestingly, this is the first high school player from outside the state of Texas to join the Red Raiders’ 2018 recruiting class.  (Butler County (Kansas)  Community College wide receiver Myron Mitchell is the only other out-of-state commitment in the class.)

This commitment is the result of recruiting efforts by new running backs coach Jabbar Juluke.  The former New Orleans area high school coach joined the Texas Tech football staff in February after a one-year stint as running backs coach at LSU.

Texas Tech has made recruiting Louisiana a priority under Kliff Kingsbury which is the main reason Juluke was added to staff.  Brumfield is the second player from the Bayou State that Juluke has brought to the Red Raiders.

Douglas Coleman, a sophomore defensive back from New Orleans was recruited to Texas Tech in 2016 by Juluke and though Juluke left the Red Raiders prior to signing day to join the LSU staff, Coleman stayed true to his commitment to Tech.

There are currently four members of the Texas Tech football team from Louisiana including linebacker Jonathan Picone, who is also from Covington.  Now it appears that Tech will be adding one of the best offensive players Louisiana has to offer.

After just three seasons, Brumfield is already the career rushing leader for Covington High School with 4,242 yards. He is also just four touchdowns shy of equaling his school’s career mark (currently sitting at 56) in that category.  These are impressive statistics considering that he plays in the New Orleans area which is one of the most competitive hot spots in the nation for high school football.

Brumfield was limited by nagging lower-body injuries last season and did not fully participate in spring ball.  However, he is looking forward to a dynamic senior season.

"“I can remember how bad … I felt at times last season with having to wear the brace on my leg. This spring that brace was gone. I feel so much better now. It just felt good to finally be able to fly around the football field again.” he told the New Orleans Advocate."

Texas Tech currently has two senior running backs on the roster, Justin Stockton and Caleb Woodward.  When Brumfield arrives next year, he will have to compete with a trio of experienced running backs, Demarcus Felton Da’Leon Ward and 2017 JUCO transfer Desmond Nisby for carries.

Therefore, Texas Tech football fans may not see this dynamic runner on the field immediately.  However, Devin Brumfield looks the part of a player that could eventually be a feature back in the “Air Raid” offense.
