Notable Red Raiders Drafted In Rounds 2-3 of NFL Draft
Louis Vasquez 2009 – Round 3
One of the best interior offensive linemen in Texas Tech history, Louis Vasquez was taken by the San Diego Chargers with the 78th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He would go on to a seven-year NFL career with the Chargers and Broncos.
He was a member of the Bronco’s Super Bowl 50 championship team helping protecting Peyton Manning. Vasquez was also a 2013 Pro Bowl and first-team All-NFL selection.
Eventually, Vasquez, who had begun to suffer nagging injuries, became a salary cap casualty of the Broncos who cut him in 2015 ending his NFL career. In his career, he started 101 of the 102 games he played including two Super Bowls.
While at Texas Tech, was a second-team all-American and first-team all-Big 12 selection in 2008. He was part of the 2008 Red Raider team that was the best in school history spending three weeks ranked as high as No. 2 in the national polls.
The 6-foot-5, 335-pound Corsicana, Texas native was one of the strongest and most powerful linemen in Texas Tech history. At the 2009 NFL Combine, Vasquez bench pressed 225 pounds 39 times. His 39 repetitions were the highest of any participant at the combine.
Vasquez is one of only 16 Texas Tech football players to win a Super Bowl title.
