Texas Tech Football Recruiting Updates
As May begins to wind down and the summer months near, the Texas Tech football staff is trying to build momentum on the recruiting trail. Here’s an update on the progress of the 2019 class.
Currently, the Texas Tech football 2019 signing class is off to a slow start. That is due in large part to the perceived uncertainty surrounding the job status of head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
However, Texas Tech’s head coach and his staff are grinding away on the recruiting trail trying to build the foundation of the program’s future. Let’s take a look at some of the latest developments.
Texas Tech in top 10 for New Mexico OT
Carlsbad, New Mexico offensive tackle Taylor Miterko has released his top-10 choices and Texas Tech has made the list. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound tackle is a three-star prospect and the top prospect in New Mexico.
After attending the Texas Tech spring game, where he picked up an offer from Kliff Kingsbury, he has visited Oklahoma State and has plans to visit Colorado as well. He also plans on taking an official visit to Texas Tech this summer. The other schools on his list include Arizona State, Baylor, TCU, Oregon, Nebraska, Washington and Oregon.
Being as Lubbock is only 180 miles from Miterko’s hometown, Texas Tech should have a great shot at landing this agile blocker. He has said that he wants to make his decision before the end of the summer so this is a name Texas Tech football fans need to keep an eye on in the upcoming weeks.
Mansfield, TX DE Has Texas Tech in top 10
Three-star Mansfield, TX defensive end Taurean Carter has Texas Tech listed in his top 10 choices. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound prospect is the No. 96 player in Texas according to 247Sports.com.
Last season, he registered 65 tackles (16 for loss), eight sacks and one forced fumble. The previous season, he had 66 tackles and six sacks as a sophomore.
In addition to Texas Tech, Carter has named Oklahoma State, Purdue, Houston, Colorado, TCU, Utah State, Michigan State, Indiana and Florida as his top schools. Carter’s interest in Texas Tech seems to be high based on the fact that he has already taken two unofficial visits to Lubbock this spring.
Tech Offers 3-star Oklahoma DE
Another defensive end on the Texas Tech radar is Norman, Oklahoma three-star defensive end Cole Mashburn. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound prospect received an offer from the Texas Tech football staff this week adding another team to a growing list of schools vying for his services.
Joining Texas Tech in pursuit of Mashburn is Iowa State, Memphis, Nevada, North Texas, Texas State and Tulsa. TCU has also shown interest but has not officially offered.
Mashburn has taken an unofficial visit to Iowa State, TCU and Norte Dame while attending the junior days for Iowa and Oklahoma. There is no word yet on if he plans to visit Texas Tech in the upcoming weeks but with only one other Power 5 school giving him an offer thus far, it would seem like Texas Tech would be an attractive option for this prospect.
Texas Tech Target Decommits From Cal
A rising star in the 2019 recruiting class, Zach Zimos from Richmond, Texas, announced his decomittment from Cal this week. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound outside linebacker is a three-star recruit and the No. 60 OLB in the nation.
In addition Texas Tech and Cal, Zimos has offers from Arkansas, Boise State, Houston, Missouri, SMU, Tulsa and UTEP. Zimos committed to Cal in late April but since has seen his stock begin to rise prompting his decision to re-open his recruitment.
What makes Zimos an interesting prospect is his ability to play pass coverage. The former safety is one of the most athletic LBs in the state and could be a great fit in a Big 12 defense as he is comfortable covering receivers and running backs.
As a junior, Zimos had 56 tackles, two picks and two fumble recoveries.
Texas Tech Offers West Texas Athlete
Odessa, Texas prospect Peyton Powell has picked up an offer from the Texas Tech football coaches. Though Powell plays QB for Permian High School, Texas Tech is interested in him as a potential receiver.

Powell is one of the most sought-after recruits in Texas with numerous big-time offers to his name. In addition to Texas Tech, such schools as Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, SUM, Tulsa, Utah, Virginia and Washington State have extended scholarship offers to the 6-foot-3, 182-pound three-star recruit.
Powell would likely be a project for the Texas Tech staff due to the fact that he’s been a quarterback in high school. Last season, he passed for 1,077 yards and 13 touchdowns and ran for 1,014 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Texas Tech Is First Big 12 Offer For Addison, TX Defensive End
Trinity Christian defensive end Justin Moore from Addison, Texas has received an offer from Texas Tech, his first from a Big 12 school. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder is a two-star prospect who is starting to emerge on the recruiting circuit.
Moore is currently a verbal commit to Rice but one must wonder how solid that commitment will be with some higher-profile schools showing interest. Moore has an offer from Air Force, Texas State, Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe as well as Texas Tech.
In 2017, Moore recorded 43 tackles (10 for a loss), five sacks and one pass break-up. As a sophomore, he had 31 tackles, seven sacks and a rumble recovery. Moore could be a sleeper in this class making it wise for Texas Tech to get in on him early.
